Hi All,
I am a huge fan of room escape game and was excited when I stumbled upon this forum.
I recently visited Singapore and played 5 different games during my short stint there.
I do wonder though, some of the rooms have themes like Inception and Harry Potter and in most cases they make exact reference from the film (e.g. character names in Harry Potter, the spell names etc).
I wonder if they have permission to do this as I would think it's a copyright issue?
Reason I ask is being a huge fan I would like to start a room escape game myself.
But I'm not sure whether I can use themes like Harry Potters, Avengers, Batman etc...
Thank you for any advice!

I'm not a lawyer!
I've seen similar things in Toronto (Canada). I'm fairly certain that they count on being small enough that the owners of the copyright don't notice or care.

Sherlock Holmes is a frequent topic for these games and the US Supreme Court recently upheld (or, at least, declined to overturn) a ruling that the first 50 stories are in the public domain, though the last 10 stories will remain in copyright for another 4-8 years depending upon the time of publishing. So best not go into detail about topics like Dr. Watson's second marriage. (And as that article points out, the whole of canon has been in the public domain in the UK since the end of the year 2000 in any case.)

Happy Monday! We base our rooms on real life events. Currently our theme is 1893 Chicago World's Fair and the US's first serial killer, H.H. Holmes. There are numerous books such asO Devil in the White City and Bloodstains(written by Holmes' great great grandson). I've had a lot of fun researching and our customers really like to learn about history!
